A Living Past

The Romans almost surely planted grape vines on these slopes. There is no doubt, however, that it has been occupied since the Middle Ages, as proven by the remains of the Santa Maria de Yerga hermitage (12th century).

One of the most well known legends about the place is related with the founding of the first Cistercian community in the Iberian Peninsula, which according to some stories was in Yerga. The Order of Cistercians arrived in the peninsula in the 12th century, and although the historical documents are not conclusive about whether the first Cistercian monastery was founded in Yerga, the legend persists and it highlights the importance of the place for the beginnings of the Cistercian presence in Spain. The Order of Cistercians, known for their emphasis on an austere monastic life and agricultural work, left a deep impression on the areas they occupied, as happened in other parts of La Rioja. Yerga is thus not just a symbol of the medieval history of the region, it’s a place where winegrowing and monastic life are intertwined and become part of the rich tradition of La Rioja as one of the most famous wine producing areas in Spain.
